The Diary of Anne Frank. A review by Louie 7K

This book is about a young Jewish girl called Anne Frank. She is forced into hiding by the Nazi occupation of Holland. This is her diary from her time in the secret annex. I loved this book. It is very sad, but is really good. It explains what happens in a Nazi occupied country and about the Jewish holocaust. It was really interesting and shed light on a difficult subject. I would recommend this book to people aged 11 and over. It was an amazing read and I would most definitely read it again

War Stories for Girls – a review by Esme 7K

These books are the perfect books  for a girl who has courage and hope. The stories are all set in the Second World War. They are action packed, and  hardly ever calm. The stories will  give you an insight about it was like to be the Second World War as a normal person.

Hitler ruins their life. They all make a choice, as the war rages on. They are all different ages, they choose different paths but they all have one thing in common HOPE. They all have a secret, some have lovers. Others find out the truth in a harsh way.

I loved these collection of stories. This book is suitable for girls over 10. They will make you  have hope and courage about everything.

Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo – a book recommendation by Marcus 7S

I think Friend or Foe is a good book to read because it teaches you about things which happen in life and that you should care for one another. This story is based in World War 2. Two young kids get separated from their family and are sent away from home with lots of other school children. They misbehave and nobody want to take care of them. But then, gradually someone comes along who says “no one deserves to be left behind”. Later on in the book the children see a German plane , and no one believes them. Not even the army and they get laughed at. However, a German soldier saves one of them but he is ill and injured. He asks them for food and water. But what do the boys do? Do they help the Germans or do they become heroes and famous for finding the Germans behind the moor? Read this book to find out.

Litcham School come fourth in the Kids Lit Quiz National Final!

A huge congratulations to Millie 8B, Matilda 7B, Esme 7K and Louie 7K who represented Litcham School at the UK National Final of the Kids’ Lit Quiz on Tuesday 4th December and came fourth, missing first place by only 4 points! A massive achievement. Well done – we are all extremely proud of you!

Since their win at the regional heat in November, the Litcham team have been working hard to prepare for the final, researching authors, illustrators, award winning books, and basically reading anything they can get their hands on. At lunchtimes, they have been practising their question answering techniques, with the help of student coach Amelia Platt who took part in the World Final in 2015.

The National final was held at The City of London School for Girls, where Litcham School competed against 17 other regional winners from across the country, including teams from as far afield as Scotland, Ireland and Cornwall. They answered five rounds of ‘buzzer style’ questions on authors, book titles, opening paragraphs, book characters and myths and legends. It was a difficult and nail biting competition, with Litcham School in joint first place at the end of the first three rounds.  Everything rested on the fifth and final, nail-biting round where our team came joint third, but were then beaten by Colfe’s School in a tie-breaker question,  into fourth place. Although they missed third place by a narrow margin, we were all thrilled with the result and proud that Litcham School performed so well in this really challenging competition.

The event was attended by whole a host of authors including Terri Terry, Geraldine McCaughrean and our very own ‘Author in Residence’ Helen Moss, amongst others. Students were given the opportunity to meet them and have books signed.

It was an amazing day. A big thank-you to Mrs Binder who accompanied us on the trip and cheered on from the side-line. As usual our fantastic students were a real credit to our school. They threw themselves into the event, behaved impeccably and were a pleasure to take.  Mrs Berry

“The Kid’s Lit final was a great opportunity to meet other children who shared the same love of reading. We got to go to London and represent the whole of East Anglia. I had a great day and it was a wonderful experience for me.” Millie 8B

“The National Final was so much fun! I really enjoyed travelling there by train watching the countryside out of the window and meeting all the authors. The quiz was difficult and complicated by the fact that the buzzers and computer scoreboard kept stopping! We came so far and the day was a great success.” Esme 7K

“I enjoyed the taking part in the quiz because I got to go to different places, and meet new people. It has also helped me to expand my reading ability and the genres of books I like to read. The event in London was great fun. I liked using the buzzers and even though the questions were very hard, I really enjoyed it. I am happy how far we came.” Louie  7K

The Kid’s Lit Quiz is something I will never forget. Although we did not win, we all had fun and established good friendships. The questions were harder than we expected but we still did well. Fourth best team in the country is quite an achievement! Matilda 7B
