A visit from Helen Moss

On Tuesday 20th November, our ‘Author in Residence’ Helen Moss visited Litcham School to carry out a creative writing workshop with students from our cluster primary schools. Based around her book ‘The Mystery of the Black Salamander’, Helen talked about inspiration for story ideas and helped students to design their own animal themed supercars. Helen also read an excerpt from her book, with supporting sound effects from the students to highlight the use of dramatic writing in action scenes. The primary students came up with some amazing car designs, and some of these will be displayed on her website www.helenmoss.org.uk. Although extremely difficult, Helen selected a winning design called the ‘Bee-Bike’. This belonged to Beatrice from Great Massingham School who received a signed copy of one of her books.

In the afternoon Helen Moss visited Golden Eagles in the primary phase. Helen shared the first chapter of her book, `The Phoenix Code’ which was based in Ancient Egypt and showed photos of her research in Egypt. The children then learnt about secret messages in the tombs and created their own next chapter of the book.

“It was an amazing afternoon. The best bit for me was when we saw the treasure box with a secret code.” Eila Rose.

“I liked learning about Ancient Egypt.” Damian.

“I enjoyed going to meet the author and making up our own animals.” Beth
