An Afternoon with the U3A: A Blog by the Community Ambassadors

On Thursday 26th April, we had a visit from some members of the University of the Third Age (U3A). This is an organisation where retired and elderly people get to take up new hobbies and interests. We interviewed two of the four ladies who visited and they asked us questions too. It was really interesting as we found out about their childhoods and their school life which sounded very different from ours. I hope they enjoyed speaking to us and finding out what young lives of today are like. I hope they come back and visit soon as I feel we can learn a lot from each other. Last Thursday we had the privilege of meeting some amazing women who are part of the U3A, a brilliant organisation which helps retired people to pursue their interests and continue to learn. It was amazing hearing their stories such as teaching in a young offenders institute and another who lived in an RAF base in Cyprus and faced bombs and terrorists. Hearing their stories was very inspiring and made us appreciate that many elderly have led very full and interesting lives and continue to do so. The purpose of the project was to bring together the older and younger generations to learn about each other and help older people not feel alone, inspired by the Joe Cox Loneliness charity. We shall be carrying out pieces of creative writing based on the information we gathered which we hope to enter in to the 2018 Young Norfolk Writing Competition next month. “I certainly enjoyed my afternoon.  Apart from teenagers in the family there is no opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with them and I found them open, interested in what I had to say, fun and doing interesting and diverse things outside of school.  Society needs to be more joined up but I don’t know how, as I think we would all benefit from the interaction of the ages. Thank you for asking me to come along.” Mrs Taylor, visiting member of U3A.
